Results indicated that compared to placebo, Celadrin® improves knee range of motion and overall joint function. It was concluded that Celadrin® may be an alternative to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for the treatment of OA.1

Another study assessed the effect of the Celadrin® cream alone in osteoarthritis of the knees. Forty patients were randomly assigned to receive either the Celadrin® cream or a placebo. Patients were tested on 3 occasions: (1) baseline, (2) 30 min after initial treatment, and (3) after 30-day treatment of cream application twice per day. Assessments included knee range of motion, timed “up-and-go” from a chair and stair climbing, and two other functional tests. For stair climbing ability and the up-and-go test, significant decreases in time were observed 30 minutes after the first administration and after one month of use only in the Celadrin® group. Likewise, range of motion of the knees increased with Celadrin® both 30 minutes after the initial application and after one month’s use. In contrast, no difference was observed in the placebo group. The other functional tests also clearly demonstrated improvements with Celadrin® while the placebo failed to produce results.2

In one of the latest studies with Celadrin® in patients with knee osteoarthritis, patients were assessed by having them stand on a special platform for 20 and 40 seconds to measure static postural stability (the ability to stand comfortably in one place for a period of time). Again, only those subjects using the Celadrin® cream demonstrated improvements.3

One of the key points to make here with Celadrin® is that unlike many other natural approaches it produces almost immediate results.

What is Gout?

Gout is a common type of arthritis caused by an increased concentration of uric acid (the final breakdown product of purine-one of the units of DNA and RNA) in biological fluids. In gout, uric acid crystals are deposited in joints, tendons, kidneys, and other tissues, where they cause considerable inflammation and damage. Gout may lead to debilitation from the uric acid deposits around the joints and tendons, and kidney involvement may result in kidney failure.

What are the signs and symptoms of Gout?

The first attack of gout is characterized by intense pain, usually involving only one joint. The first joint of the big toe is affected in nearly half of the first attacks, and is at some time involved in over ninety percent of individuals with gout. If the attack progresses, fever and chills will appear. The first attacks usually occur at night and are usually preceded by a specific event, such as dietary excess, alcohol ingestion, trauma, certain drugs (mainly chemotherapy drugs, certain diuretics, and high dosages of niacin), or surgery.

What causes Gout?

Gout is the result of either increased synthesis of uric acid; reduced ability to excrete uric acid; or both over production and under excretion of uric acid. Several dietary factors are known to be trigger gout, including consumption of alcohol, high-purine-content foods (organ meats, meat, yeast, poultry, etc.), fats, refined carbohydrates, and excessive calories.

What dietary factors are important in Gout?

Alcohol increases uric acid production by accelerating purine breakdown. It also reduces uric acid excretion by increasing lactate production, which impairs kidney function. Elimination of alcohol is all that is needed to reduce uric acid levels and prevent gouty arthritis in many individuals.

A low-purine diet has long been the mainstay of dietary therapy for gout. Foods with high purine levels should be entirely omitted. These include: organ meats, meats, shellfish, yeast (brewer’s and baker’s), herring, sardines, mackerel, and anchovies. Intake of foods with moderate levels of protein should be reduced as well. These include: dried legumes, spinach, asparagus, fish, poultry, and mushrooms.

Obesity is associated with an increased rate of gout. Weight reduction in obese individuals significantly reduces serum uric acid levels. Weight reduction should involve the use of a high-fiber, low-fat diet, as this type of diet will help manage the elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels that are also common in obesity.

Refined carbohydrates, fructose, and saturated fat intake should be kept to a minimum. Simple sugars (refined sugar, honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, fructose, etc.) increase uric acid production, while saturated fats decrease uric acid excretion. The diet should focus on complex carbohydrates such as legumes, whole grains, and vegetables rather than on simple sugars.

Liberal fluid intake keeps the urine diluted and promotes the excretion of uric acid. Furthermore, dilution of the urine reduces the risk of kidney stones. Drink at least 48 ounces of water each day.

Cherries, hawthorn berries, blueberries, and other dark red-blue berries are rich sources of anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins. Consuming one-half pound of fresh or canned cherries per day has been shown to be very effective in lowering uric acid levels and preventing attacks of gout. In addition to consuming anthocyanidin- and proanthocyanidin-rich berries, extracts of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), grape seed (Vitis vinifera), or pine bark (Pinus maritima) can be used. The typical dosage recommendation for these flavonoid rich extracts is 150 to 300 mg daily.

Melatonin Protects Against Female Cancers
Exciting new research shows that melatonin is important for much more. A study published in Neuroendocrinology in 2003 found that melatonin has an antiestrogenic effect on estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer cells. Further research released in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that nurses who worked rotating night shifts 3 nights per month for fifteen years had a higher incidence of colorectal cancer. Earlier studies had confirmed that night shift workers had higher rates of breast cancer but the colorectal study found melatonin also had an anticancer effect on intestinal cancers.

Another study reported in Gynecology and Obstetric Investigation showed a significant correlation between melatonin deficiency and endometrial cancer. Unlike cervical cancer there is no screening method for endometrial cancer which is the most common pelvic cancer in women. In this study they looked at 138 women. Sixty-eight women were diagnosed with endometrial cancer and 70 with abnormal bleeding. The researchers compared the blood melatonin levels of each group and found that there was a 6-fold lower difference in melatonin levels in those with endometrial cancer. The researchers believe that melatonin levels may be an indicator of endometrial cancer and declining levels of melatonin a risk factor for developing the disease.

Melatonin has also been evaluated as a treatment to maintain normal blood pressure in diabetics. It also protects the stomach mucosa from acute gastric lesions caused by stress. For those people having difficulty stopping benzodiazepines commonly referred to as sleeping pills melatonin has been used effectively to help withdraw from these drugs without side effects.

Night lights and street lights streaming light through your bedroom window at night both have been found to inhibit melatonin production while sleeping. Purchase light-inhibiting drapes for your windows, turn off those night lights and close your bedroom door at night to shut out the light to enhance your body’s own melatonin levels.
