In order to understand proteolytic enzymes, it’s important to have a basic understanding of enzymes in the body. Enzymes are proteins that facilitate chemical reactions in living organisms. In fact, they are required for every single chemical action that takes place in your body. All of your tissues, muscles, bones, organs and cells are run by enzymes.

Your digestive system, immune system, bloodstream, liver, kidneys, spleen and pancreas, as well as your ability to see, think, feel and breathe, all depend on enzymes. All of the minerals and vitamins you eat, and all of the hormones your body produces need enzymes in order to work properly. In fact, enzymes govern every single metabolic function in your body: your stamina, energy level, ability to utilize vitamins and minerals, immune system and more. The vast majority of metabolic enzymes in the body – the enzymes that regulate everything from liver function to the immune system – are proteases, or proteolytic enzymes, which regulate protein function in the body. When we eat foods that are enzyme dead (cooked or processed), we force the body to divert its production of enzymes away from proteolytic enzymes, which govern metabolic functions, into digestive proteolytic enzymes designed to break down dead proteins in our diets. The consequences of this’diversion are enormous. Conversely, the benefits of supplementing with proteolytic enzymes are profound. And by supplementing, I mean:

Supplementing with “digestive” proteolytic enzymes at meals to ease the burden on the body, so it no longer has to divert its resources.

Supplementing with “special” proteolytic enzymes between meals, so the enzymes can enter the bloodstream and augment the proteolytic functions of our metabolic enzymes.

It’s possible to use good-quality digestive enzymes for both functions and receive a significant amount of benefit. But it’s far more beneficial to use formulas that are optimized for each particular function. With that in mind, let’s now look at some of the profound benefits of supplementing with a dedicated proteolytic formula. These include:

Reducing inflammation: Inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury. However, excessive inflammation retards the healing process. Proteolytic enzymes reduce inflammation by neutralizing the biochemicals of inflammation (i.e., bradykinins and pro-inflammatory eicosanoids) to levels at which the synthesis, repair and regeneration of injured tissues can take place.1 Reducing inflammation can have immediate impact on improved heart health, cancer prevention and recovery, and Alzheimer’s prevention. It also helps speed up recovery from sprains, strains, fractures, bruises, contusions, surgery and arthritis. In one study, football players who suffered from ankle injuries found that proteolytic enzyme supplements accelerated healing and got the players back on the field 50 percent faster than athletes who received placebo tablets. (My son and I would be great examples of that.) Achilles heel injury and PCL injury healed much faster then any other patient they had in their office.

Other trials have shown that supplemental proteolytic enzymes can help reduce inflammation, speed healing of bruises and other tissue injuries (including fractures), and reduce overall recovery time when compared to athletes taking a placebo. And even in patients recovering from facial and various reconstructive surgeries, treatment with proteolytic enzymes significantly reduced swelling, bruising and stiffness compared to placebo groups

Cleansing the blood of debris: Proteolytic enzymes are the primary tools the body uses to “digest” organic debris in the circulatory and lymph systems. Supplementing merely improves the effectiveness of the process.

Dissolving fibrin in the blood, reducing the risk of clots: Certain specialized proteases such as nattokinase are extremely effective at improving the “quality” of blood cells, optimizing the ability of blood to flow through the circulatory system, and reducing the risk of clots.8 This is extremely important in reducing the risk of stroke. It also makes using proteolytic enzymes during long plane flights a no-brainer, as they minimize the potential of blood clots in the legs.

Maximized immune system: The primary vehicle the immune system uses for destroying invaders is enzymes. Macrophages, for example, literally digest invaders with proteolytic enzymes. Supplementation significantly improves the ability of your immune system to do its job.

Killing of bacteria, viruses, molds and fungi: Bacteria, viruses, molds and fungi are protein/ amino acid-based. Proteolytic enzymes taken between meals literally go into the bloodstream and digest these invaders.

Elimination of autoimmune diseases: Large undigested proteins make their way into the bloodstream and form circulating immune complexes (CICs), which trigger allergies and autoimmune diseases. Supplemental proteolytic enzymes clean CICs out of the body, thereby reducing allergies and autoimmune conditions. In addition, this helps with sinusitis and asthma.

Dissolving of scar tissue: Scar tissue is made of protein. Proteolytic enzymes can effectively “digest” scar tissue – particularly in the circulatory system.

And finally, a properly designed supplemental proteolytic enzyme formula can help reduce the symptoms of MS, clean out the lungs and aid in detoxing.

The vast majority of metabolic enzymes in the body – the enzymes that regulate everything from liver function to the immune system – are proteases, or proteolytic enzymes, which regulate protein function in the body.

What is Gout?

Gout is a common type of arthritis caused by an increased concentration of uric acid (the final breakdown product of purine-one of the units of DNA and RNA) in biological fluids. In gout, uric acid crystals are deposited in joints, tendons, kidneys, and other tissues, where they cause considerable inflammation and damage. Gout may lead to debilitation from the uric acid deposits around the joints and tendons, and kidney involvement may result in kidney failure.

What are the signs and symptoms of Gout?

The first attack of gout is characterized by intense pain, usually involving only one joint. The first joint of the big toe is affected in nearly half of the first attacks, and is at some time involved in over ninety percent of individuals with gout. If the attack progresses, fever and chills will appear. The first attacks usually occur at night and are usually preceded by a specific event, such as dietary excess, alcohol ingestion, trauma, certain drugs (mainly chemotherapy drugs, certain diuretics, and high dosages of niacin), or surgery.

What causes Gout?

Gout is the result of either increased synthesis of uric acid; reduced ability to excrete uric acid; or both over production and under excretion of uric acid. Several dietary factors are known to be trigger gout, including consumption of alcohol, high-purine-content foods (organ meats, meat, yeast, poultry, etc.), fats, refined carbohydrates, and excessive calories.

What dietary factors are important in Gout?

Alcohol increases uric acid production by accelerating purine breakdown. It also reduces uric acid excretion by increasing lactate production, which impairs kidney function. Elimination of alcohol is all that is needed to reduce uric acid levels and prevent gouty arthritis in many individuals.

A low-purine diet has long been the mainstay of dietary therapy for gout. Foods with high purine levels should be entirely omitted. These include: organ meats, meats, shellfish, yeast (brewer’s and baker’s), herring, sardines, mackerel, and anchovies. Intake of foods with moderate levels of protein should be reduced as well. These include: dried legumes, spinach, asparagus, fish, poultry, and mushrooms.

Obesity is associated with an increased rate of gout. Weight reduction in obese individuals significantly reduces serum uric acid levels. Weight reduction should involve the use of a high-fiber, low-fat diet, as this type of diet will help manage the elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels that are also common in obesity.

Refined carbohydrates, fructose, and saturated fat intake should be kept to a minimum. Simple sugars (refined sugar, honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, fructose, etc.) increase uric acid production, while saturated fats decrease uric acid excretion. The diet should focus on complex carbohydrates such as legumes, whole grains, and vegetables rather than on simple sugars.

Liberal fluid intake keeps the urine diluted and promotes the excretion of uric acid. Furthermore, dilution of the urine reduces the risk of kidney stones. Drink at least 48 ounces of water each day.

Cherries, hawthorn berries, blueberries, and other dark red-blue berries are rich sources of anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins. Consuming one-half pound of fresh or canned cherries per day has been shown to be very effective in lowering uric acid levels and preventing attacks of gout. In addition to consuming anthocyanidin- and proanthocyanidin-rich berries, extracts of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), grape seed (Vitis vinifera), or pine bark (Pinus maritima) can be used. The typical dosage recommendation for these flavonoid rich extracts is 150 to 300 mg daily.
Look for Proanthenols
Life Plus has a product that has both PhytoZymes and Proanthenols so you get both combined to help.

Drinking Acai will also give you the berries that you need to lower the uric acid.

What nutritional supplements should I take for Gout?

Foundation Supplements. There are three products from Natural Factors that I think are critical in supporting good health:

MultiStart (age and gender specific multiple vitamin and mineral formulas). Follow label instructions.

Enriching Greens – a great tasting “greens drink” containing highly concentrated “greens” like chlorella, spirulina, wheat grass juice, barley grass juice, etc., and herbal extracts. Take one serving (one tablespoon) in 8 ounces of water daily.

RxOmega-3 Factors – A true pharmaceutical grade fish oil supplement. Take two capsules daily.
I recommend taking liquid Fish Oil. Taking the liquid goes directly into your blood stream and works much quicker.

Celery Extract standardized to contain 85% 3nB (3-n-butylpthalide) – a compound unique to celery that is responsible for the characteristic flavor and odor of celery as well as its medicinal effects – has been shown to produce significant benefits in the treatment of gout. The recommended dosage is 75 to 150 mg twice daily.

Celadrin® is an all-natural matrix of special cetylated, esterifed fatty acids that reduce inflammation. The unique features of Celadrin® as a natural product include an ability to reduce inflammation and pain quickly with no side effects as demonstrated in clinical trials published in the internationally acclaimed Journal of Rheumatology. Available in cream and capsule form, Celadrin® is clinically proven to produce results. Celadrin® cream can be applied to affected areas on an as needed basis. The dosage with oral preparations is three soft gelatin capsules daily.

Superfood No. 10: Yogurt and Kefir

What Are Probiotics and What Do They Do?

Early in the 20th century, research by Nobel Prize-winning biologist Dr. Elie Metchnikoff led him to propose the “intoxication theory” of disease. Metchnikoff believed that aging was accelerated by toxins secreted by unfriendly bacteria that putrefy and ferment food in the intestines. He also believed that the harmless bacteria in fermented milk products might explain the longevity of certain ethnic groups—most notably the peoples of the Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia.

Accordingly, Metchnikoff recommended consuming “cultured” foods, such as yogurt, that contain healthful bacteria. His ideas spread rapidly, and in short order, both yogurt and the concept underlying probiotics garnered world attention. And because Metchnikoff identified lactic-acid-secreting bacteria as among the most beneficial, these so-called lactobacilli became an early focus of popular efforts to put Metchnikoff’s hypothesis into practice. Today, probiotic microbes are routinely fed to livestock, and it is widely accepted that various lactobacillus and bifidobacteria species hold great promise for enhancing human health.

In humans, probiotic microbes help the body’s ongoing fight against infectious diseases by competing with the pathogens for food, nutrients and survival. This is why human breast milk is rich in nutritional factors that foster the growth of bifidobacteria—a beneficial bacterial family that keeps babies’ intestinal ecosystems healthy and disease-resistant.

Probiotics Versus Disease

Preliminary research supports probiotics’ potential to prevent or treat many common conditions . Probiotics:

Ameliorate vaginal (bacterial and yeast), urinary tract and bladder infections.

Ameliorate inflammatory intestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Ameliorate food allergies and inflammatory, allergic conditions like asthma and eczema.

Reduce several risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Reduce several risk factors for intestinal cancers.

Reduce the duration of gastroenteritis and rotavirus-induced diarrhea in infants.

Reduce the rate of childhood respiratory infections.

Ameliorate microbe-induced traveler’s diarrhea.

Help prevent tooth decay.

Probiotics, Inflammation and Immune Function

Researchers have found that people whose diet is rich in probiotics foods enjoy enhanced immune function. It appears that probiotics normalize immune responses, inhibit chronic sub-clinical inflammation, and may improve inflammatory conditions with an autoimmune component, such as asthma, eczema and Crohn’s disease.

Today there is an alarming emergence of disease-causing agents (viral, bacterial, etc.) that are resistant to antibiotics. These dire and potentially life-threatening circumstances have prompted urgent research into the use of probiotic bacteria to battle infections. We now know that probiotics can raise antibody levels in the body. This immune-system boost reduces the risk of infections taking hold in the first place, thus avoiding the need for antibiotics. Many doctors recommend live yogurt for patients on antibiotics to replenish good bacteria and some argue that yogurt live cultures may also reduce the occurrence of colds, allergies and hay fever.

Many of you that know me know that I always tell people to take acidophilus after taking antibiotic (Antibiotics taken orally will also kill beneficial bacteria such as L. acidophilus. After a course of antibiotic therapy, patients are occasionally instructed to take an L. acidophilus treatment in order to recolonize the gastrointestinal tract.)or if you have the stomach bug, etc…

What I like about taking a capsule of probiotic (acidophilus) is that there is NO SUGAR so the bug, virus, bacteria can’t be fed sugar to stay alive.
I really like Dr. Murray’s probiotic’s by Natural Factors. One of them that I like is the Ultimate Probiotic 12/12 Formula is a twelve-strain blend with a minimum of 12 billion live cells at expiry date. Different species in a single formula more closely approximate the normal composition of intestinal flora.

Superfood No. 2: The Allium Family

Onions, Garlic, Chives, Leeks, Shallots and Scallions

If açaí is the most exotic food on this list, the Allium family of foods is perhaps the most humble. Garlic, onions, leeks and chives contain flavonoids that stimulate the production of glutathione (the tripeptide that is the liver’s most potent antioxidant). Glutathione enhances elimination of toxins and carcinogens, putting the Allium family of vegetables at the top of the list for foods that can help prevent cancer. Here are just a few benefits from members of this family.

Garlic

Lowers total cholesterol (but raises HDL—”good”—cholesterol)

Lessens the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)

Lowers blood pressure

Reduces the risk of blood clots (cause of the majority of strokes and heart attacks)

Destroys infection-causing viruses and bacteria

Reduces the risk of certain cancers, in particular, stomach cancers

Produces more “natural killer” cells in the blood to fight tumors and infections

Helps fight against neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s

Enhances detoxification by reducing toxins

For optimum effect, eat garlic raw. Cooking can destroy some of the allicin compound, which is the active constituent.

Onions

Inhibit the growth of cancerous cells

Increase in HDL cholesterol (especially when eaten raw)

Reduce total cholesterol levels

Increase blood-clot dissolving activity

Help prevent colds

Stimulate the immune system

Reduce the risks of diabetes

Have antibacterial and antifungal properties

Reduce the risk of certain cancers

Help relieve stomach upset and other gastrointestinal disorders

Onions contain two powerful antioxidants, sulphur and quercetin—both help neutralize the free radicals in the body, and protect the membranes of the body’s cells from damage.

Leeks
Leeks have all of the healthy properties of the Allium family as described above. However leeks also contain these nutrients:

Vitamin B6

Vitamin C

Folate

Manganese

Iron

Fiber

This particular combination of nutrients makes leeks particularly helpful in stabilizing blood sugar, since they not only slow the absorption of sugars from the intestinal tract, but help ensure that they are properly metabolized in the body. Remember, the stabilization of blood sugar is one of the most important goals of the Perricone Promise. Spikes in blood sugar accelerate aging, wrinkles and a host of degenerative diseases.

We all know that onions and garlic are important for imparting delicious flavor to a meal. However, when we include leeks, we raise the flavor of the meal from delicious to “sublime.” They are particularly delicious with fish such as halibut, chicken and fish and chicken soups.

Nature’s Energy Fruit

It may seem odd to start this list of superfoods with one you’ve likely never even heard of. But studies have shown that this little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world! Açaí (ah-sigh-ee) is the high-energy berry of a special Amazon palm tree. Harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, açaí tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate. Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes it nature’s perfect energy fruit. Açaí is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Although açaí may not be available in your local supermarket, you can find it in several health food and gourmet stores (often in juice form). A new product featuring the unsweetened pulp is now also available, and I highly recommend that you choose this form of açaí.

Açaí pulp contains:

A remarkable concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.

A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols to help promote cardiovascular and digestive health.

An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration.

The fatty acid content in açaí resembles that of olive oil, and is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid. Oleic acid is important for a number of reasons. It helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane; together they help make cell membranes more supple. By keeping the cell membrane supple, all hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors function more efficiently. This is particularly important because high insulin levels create an inflammatory state, and we know, inflammation causes aging.

I have found the brand http://www.sambazon.com/ to be very good brand. They carry manyproducts with acai – smoothies, sorbet, drinks etc. I really like blending the frozen smoothie packs. They really taste great.

If you are trying to increase the fiber in your diet, you might want to consider steadily building up your intake rather than quickly ramping it up—otherwise, you could find yourself running for the bathroom.

“You can’t go from the average in America of 10 to 12 grams of fiber to the 25 grams that a woman needs or the 35 that a male needs just like that. It’s just too much all at once,” Dr. Oz says. “Remember there are more bacteria in your intestines than there are cells in your body, so there are a lot of guys in there, and they’re just trying to metabolize the food. So you give them a lot of fiber all at once, they’re going to make a lot of gas out of it.”

One intestinally gentle way to increase your fiber is by adding psyllium husks to your food. “If you’re having a lot of foods like beans, you can add just a little bit of something called Beano. There are other products like it, but they provide enzymes—natural enzymes—that help your body get rid of some of the gaseous elements.”

Another way to offset the gaseous side effects of a dramatic increase in fiber, Dr. Oz says, is by eating a Peruvian whole grain seed called chia—which is the same grain used to make Chia Pets—though you obviously shouldn’t eat a Chia Pet.

These muffins are delicious, easy to make and great for you. Enjoy them hot out of the oven and keep extra for lunchtime snacks for the kids (or you) during the week. Pumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions in overall health. Current studies link diets rich in foods with beta-carotene to reducing the risk of certain types of cancer and protection against heart disease. Chia seeds can be found at some health food stores.

Chia is as chockfull of fiber as other whole grains, but it packs in even more vitamins. “Remember that broccoli I had before? [One of these muffins] has more magnesium than about 10 of those heads of broccoli, and it’s got as much calcium in it as a couple cups of milk,” Dr. Oz says. “It adds one other thing, too, by the way. It’s very rich in the next big category, which are omega-3 fatty acids.”

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp. chia seeds, ground (use a coffee or spice grinder)

1 cup whole wheat or whole grain flour

1/2 cup white unbleached flour

2 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

16 oz. can organic pumpkin (make sure there is only pumpkin listed on the ingredient list)

2 eggs

1?4 cup high-quality extra virgin olive oil

1 cup pure maple syrup (or 1?2 cup agave nectar or a combination of the two)

1 Tbsp. vanilla

1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans, optional

Salt and pepper to taste

Pre-heat oven to 350°.

Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix all wet ingredients.

Fold the wet ingredients (fold in nuts now if you are using them) into the dry ingredients and spoon into paper-lined muffin or greased muffin tins. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of a muffin comes out clean. Store completely cooled muffins in sealable plastic bags in the freezer.
