Source-(NaturalNews) Millions of Americans use scented candles, air freshener sprays, plug-in deodorizers and diffusers to make their living spaces smell clean and pleasant, but are the chemicals in these products safe? New research compiled by scientists from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., and the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic suggests that various chemical additives in air fresheners can trigger allergies, asthma and other health problems.

“The chemicals in some of these products can trigger the nasal congestion, sneezing and the runny nose,” said Dr. Stanley Fineman, an allergist from Emory who helped gather data for the study. “With the asthmatics, there’s really good data showing their lung function changes when they’re exposed to these compounds.”

Many scented air freshener products contain harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, benzene and limonene, which are known to trigger asthma and other respiratory symptoms, as well as eye irritation, bone damage and leukemia. They also contain various other toxic ingredients like benzyl alcohol, camphor, dichlorobenzene, ethanol, naphthalene, phenol and pinene (http://mcs-america.org/airfresh.pdf).

Healthier Alternative

This is one of my favorite diffuser. I can put one of my young living essential oils on it and set the timer to diffuser Grade A essential oils into the air instead of TOXIC chemicals

If you are traveling try using the Travel Diffuser
http://www.youngliving.com/oil-diffusers/Travel

The Travel Fan diffuser introduces convenience and portability to essential oil diffusing. The Travel Fan is capable of diffusing any essential oil. It diffuses by blowing cool air through the essential oil pad, releasing the therapeutic benefits of the essential oil into the air and allowing the oils to be easily absorbed. The Travel Fan Diffuser uses a quiet but powerful mini fan and all natural high-density essential oil pads, and has output that can fill room as large as 1000 sq. ft.

The travel fan diffuser includes 1 Lavender essential oil(5ml).

Lung, Bronchial, and Sinus Health from Natural Factors is designed to provide key nutrients and herbal extracts for healthy airways. For example, it provides N-acetylcysteine (NAC) – a derivative of the naturally occurring amino acid cysteine. NAC directly splits the sulfur linkages of mucoproteins thereby reducing viscosity of bronchial and lung secretions. As a result it improves bronchial and lung function, reduces cough, and improves oxygen saturation in the blood.

Adults and children over 12 years of age: One tablet three to four times daily. Children 6 to 12 years of age: One tablet up to three times daily. Not recommended for children under six years of age unless recommended by a physician.

Virtually all of us take the ability to get a good breath of air for granted. However, for people suffering from chronic sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive lung disease, and other diseases of the respiratory tract, an effortless breath of air is greatly appreciated.

One of the most important features of healthy airways is the elasticity and fluidity of the respiratory tract secretions. If the mucus is too thick, it blocks airways and causes difficulty in breathing. Fortunately Lung, Bronchial & Sinus Health is a safe and effective natural product that can make breathing easier.

This formulation can help those with chronic respiratory problems. It is a useful adjunct for anyone with asthma, bronchial congestion, and sinus problems. It is also ideal for occasional hayfever, or to deal with air pollution, such as car exhaust and second hand smoke. It can even help with a cold that seems to hang on too long.

RxOmega-3 FactorsTM is a pharmaceutical grade liquid fish oil concentrate providing one of the highest potency of EPA and DHA available. Stringent quality control standards ensure this highly purified fish oil concentrate is free from toxic environmental contaminants and heavy metals like mercury. Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease*.

One serving (1 tsp) of RxOmega-3 FactorsTM provides 1500 mg of EPA and 750 mg of DHA Omega-3 fatty acids. RxOmega-3 FactorsTM liquid oil has a pleasant orange flavor and is also available in softgel capsules.

Take the liquid over the softgel because it goes directly into your blood stream and you get the benefits much quicker then through a softgel.

RxOmega-3 Factors contains 750 mg long-chain fatty acids (500 mg EPA/250 mg DHA). The 2:1 ratio of EPA and DHA in RxOmega-3 Factors liquid has been the dominant ratio used and proven in scientific studies to produce clinical benefits.

While most North Americans eat too much of the omega-6 oils found in meats and most vegetable oils, they suffer a relative deficiency of the omega-3 oils, a situation that is associated with an increase risk for heart disease and about 60 other conditions, including cancer, arthritis, stroke, high blood pressure, skin diseases, and diabetes. Particularly important to good health are the longer chain omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) found in fish, especially cold-water fish, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, and halibut. Although the body can convert alpha-linolenic acid, a short-chain omega-3 fatty acid, from flaxseed oil it is much more efficient to get them from fish oils. Furthermore, there is evidence that many people have a difficult time converting alpha-linolenic acid to EPA and DHA.

Why are the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids so important? The answer has to do with the function of these fatty substances in cellular membranes. A diet that is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, results in altered cell membranes. Without a healthy membrane, cells lose their ability to hold water, vital nutrients, and electrolytes. They also lose their ability to communicate with other cells and be controlled by regulating hormones. They simply do not function properly. Cell membrane dysfunction is a critical factor in the development of virtually every chronic disease, especially cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. Not surprisingly, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids have shown tremendous protective effects against all of these diseases. This delicious orange flavoured liquid provides 1,470 mg of fish oil in only one-third of a teaspoon.

Benefits

Excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids

Reduces inflammation

Promotes beautiful skin

Reduces cholesterol levels

Protects cardiovascular function

In order to understand proteolytic enzymes, it’s important to have a basic understanding of enzymes in the body. Enzymes are proteins that facilitate chemical reactions in living organisms. In fact, they are required for every single chemical action that takes place in your body. All of your tissues, muscles, bones, organs and cells are run by enzymes.

Your digestive system, immune system, bloodstream, liver, kidneys, spleen and pancreas, as well as your ability to see, think, feel and breathe, all depend on enzymes. All of the minerals and vitamins you eat, and all of the hormones your body produces need enzymes in order to work properly. In fact, enzymes govern every single metabolic function in your body: your stamina, energy level, ability to utilize vitamins and minerals, immune system and more. The vast majority of metabolic enzymes in the body – the enzymes that regulate everything from liver function to the immune system – are proteases, or proteolytic enzymes, which regulate protein function in the body. When we eat foods that are enzyme dead (cooked or processed), we force the body to divert its production of enzymes away from proteolytic enzymes, which govern metabolic functions, into digestive proteolytic enzymes designed to break down dead proteins in our diets. The consequences of this’diversion are enormous. Conversely, the benefits of supplementing with proteolytic enzymes are profound. And by supplementing, I mean:

Supplementing with “digestive” proteolytic enzymes at meals to ease the burden on the body, so it no longer has to divert its resources.

Supplementing with “special” proteolytic enzymes between meals, so the enzymes can enter the bloodstream and augment the proteolytic functions of our metabolic enzymes.

It’s possible to use good-quality digestive enzymes for both functions and receive a significant amount of benefit. But it’s far more beneficial to use formulas that are optimized for each particular function. With that in mind, let’s now look at some of the profound benefits of supplementing with a dedicated proteolytic formula. These include:

Reducing inflammation: Inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury. However, excessive inflammation retards the healing process. Proteolytic enzymes reduce inflammation by neutralizing the biochemicals of inflammation (i.e., bradykinins and pro-inflammatory eicosanoids) to levels at which the synthesis, repair and regeneration of injured tissues can take place.1 Reducing inflammation can have immediate impact on improved heart health, cancer prevention and recovery, and Alzheimer’s prevention. It also helps speed up recovery from sprains, strains, fractures, bruises, contusions, surgery and arthritis. In one study, football players who suffered from ankle injuries found that proteolytic enzyme supplements accelerated healing and got the players back on the field 50 percent faster than athletes who received placebo tablets. (My son and I would be great examples of that.) Achilles heel injury and PCL injury healed much faster then any other patient they had in their office.

Other trials have shown that supplemental proteolytic enzymes can help reduce inflammation, speed healing of bruises and other tissue injuries (including fractures), and reduce overall recovery time when compared to athletes taking a placebo. And even in patients recovering from facial and various reconstructive surgeries, treatment with proteolytic enzymes significantly reduced swelling, bruising and stiffness compared to placebo groups

Cleansing the blood of debris: Proteolytic enzymes are the primary tools the body uses to “digest” organic debris in the circulatory and lymph systems. Supplementing merely improves the effectiveness of the process.

Dissolving fibrin in the blood, reducing the risk of clots: Certain specialized proteases such as nattokinase are extremely effective at improving the “quality” of blood cells, optimizing the ability of blood to flow through the circulatory system, and reducing the risk of clots.8 This is extremely important in reducing the risk of stroke. It also makes using proteolytic enzymes during long plane flights a no-brainer, as they minimize the potential of blood clots in the legs.

Maximized immune system: The primary vehicle the immune system uses for destroying invaders is enzymes. Macrophages, for example, literally digest invaders with proteolytic enzymes. Supplementation significantly improves the ability of your immune system to do its job.

Killing of bacteria, viruses, molds and fungi: Bacteria, viruses, molds and fungi are protein/ amino acid-based. Proteolytic enzymes taken between meals literally go into the bloodstream and digest these invaders.

Elimination of autoimmune diseases: Large undigested proteins make their way into the bloodstream and form circulating immune complexes (CICs), which trigger allergies and autoimmune diseases. Supplemental proteolytic enzymes clean CICs out of the body, thereby reducing allergies and autoimmune conditions. In addition, this helps with sinusitis and asthma.

Dissolving of scar tissue: Scar tissue is made of protein. Proteolytic enzymes can effectively “digest” scar tissue – particularly in the circulatory system.

And finally, a properly designed supplemental proteolytic enzyme formula can help reduce the symptoms of MS, clean out the lungs and aid in detoxing.

The vast majority of metabolic enzymes in the body – the enzymes that regulate everything from liver function to the immune system – are proteases, or proteolytic enzymes, which regulate protein function in the body.

What nutritional supplements should I take for asthma?

Foundation Supplements. There are three products from Natural Factors that I think are critical in supporting good health:

MultiStart (age and gender specific multiple vitamin and mineral formulas). Follow label instructions.

Enriching Greens – a great tasting “greens drink” containing highly concentrated “greens” like chlorella, spirulina, wheat grass juice, barley grass juice, etc., and herbal extracts. Take one serving (one tablespoon) in 8 ounces of water daily.

RxOmega-3 Factors – A true pharmaceutical grade fish oil supplement. For asthma, take five capsules daily. This dosage will provide 2,000 mg of EPA and 1,000 mg of DHA.

Magnesium deficiency plays a major role in many cases of asthma. Magnesium deficiency makes the bronchial airways more prone to spasm. Take an additional 150 to 250 mg of magnesium three times per day. Magnesium bound to aspartate, citrate, and malate is preferred to magnesium bound to oxide because of better absorption.

Grape seed or pine bark extract contain flavonoids known as procyanidolic oligomers (PCOs) that exert exceptional antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity. Take 300 to 600 mg of PCOs daily if you have asthma.

Additional recommendations:

Here is an important recommendation that I have found useful in helping asthmatics reduce their exposure to airborne allergens, such as pollen, dander, and dust mites. I tell them to remove dogs, cats, carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, and other surfaces from their house where allergens can collect is a great first step. If this can’t be done entirely, then I stress to them the importance of making sure that the bedroom is as allergy-proof as possible. Encase the mattress in an allergen-proof plastic; wash sheets, blankets, pillowcases, and mattress pads every week in hot water with additive- and fragrance-free detergent; consider using bedding material made from Ventflex, a special hypoallergenic synthetic material; and install an air purifier. The best mechanical air purifiers are HEPA (high-efficiency particulate arresting) filters, which can be attached to central heating and air-conditioning systems. These units are available from suppliers of heating and air-conditioning units.
What causes asthma?

Asthma has typically been divided into two major categories: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic, or atopic, asthma is generally considered an allergic condition, with a characteristic increase in levels of serum IgE-the allergic antibody. Intrinsic asthma is associated with a bronchial reaction that is due not to allergy, but rather to such factors as toxic chemicals, cold air, exercise, infection, and emotional upset. Both extrinsic and intrinsic factors trigger the release of chemicals like histamine that mediate (produce or control) inflammation from mast cells-specialized white blood cells that reside in various body tissues, including the lining of the respiratory passages. The rate of asthma in the United States is rising rapidly, especially among children. Reasons often given to explain the rise in asthma include: increased stress on the immune system due to greater chemical pollution in the air, water, and food; earlier weaning and earlier introduction of solid foods to infants; food additives; and genetic manipulation of plants, resulting in food components with greater allergenic tendencies.
